Driving Directions

Our location is technically adjacent to the Yosemite National Park's boundary and can only be accessed through the entrance gates and then driving through the park. We are located about 1 mile west of the Chinquapin Junction (which was built in 1882), about 22 miles from the Southern entrance and 12 miles to the beginning of the valley floor.

Directions from Hwy 41 at Chinquapin Junction:

Drive south on Hwy 41 about 1 mile (you'll see a sign for Yosemite West), turn right into Yosemite West, and drive another 0.8 miles to the mailboxes and public phone; continue downhill to Yosemite Park Way.

    eco-friendly initiatives such as: GreenPath, Park and Ride, Order Green Cuisine, and more.
  • Use the free Water Stations and recycle at any one of over 100 recycling stops throughout the park.
  • The Recycling Center in the Valley is located behind the Village Store in Yosemite Village.
  • Ride the Free Hybrid Shuttle
  • Visit Curry Village or Yosemite Lodge to rent a bike.
  • At the Sunset House we use soaps with 100% biodegradable packaging and encourage guests to conserve water by taking shorter showers.

Our house is located inside Yosemite National Park under tall pines, surrounded by a grove of Pacific Dogwoods. Redwoods, incense cedar, elderberries, are just a few examples of the flora around the property. Fauna is represented by deer, coyotes, chipmunks and squirrels, and the occasional bear. For the birders, a rare pileated woodpecker was observed foraging on the property!

Yosemite National Park presents a glaciated landscape. U-shaped canyons, jagged peaks, rounded domes, waterfalls and moraines are all outcomes of glaciation. Water has shaped the Sierra Nevada landscape in the form of glaciers-two of which still remain at Mounts Maclure and Lyell. The scenery, resulting from the interaction of the glaciers and the underlying rocks, was the basis for Yosemite's preservation as a national park. And, nearly 95 percent of Yosemite is designated as Wilderness. Yosemite Falls, at 2,425-foot, is the tallest waterfall in North America.

Yosemite has more than 800 miles of trails; the park offers dozens of incomparable meadows and more than a hundred lakes, plus waterfalls, giant trees, world-famous mountain scenery, rivers- and even a few river beaches. It's bigger than a handful of European countries and nearly the size of Rhode Island.

A local hiking experience in the Yosemite West neighborhood is the Henness Ridge Fire Lookout Trail. This unmarked trail head starts at the end of Azalea Lane in Yosemite West. Using the paved access road to the right, hike past the water towers and continue 0.7 miles to the Henness Ridge fire lookout tower. This historic site is one of two remaining four rustic-style lookouts in the state. Built in 1939 by Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), it was used by US Park Service for fire detection during the 60's and 70's, and is now historic structure number 5300.

Lodging Style and Amenities

This private residence was built in 1999 to take full advantage of the unobstructed westerly views. No neighbors in sight when you look out towards the western horizon and nothing between you and glorious sunsets and millions of stars. We have two units:

THE SUNSET HOUSE: (on the top floor): This is a two bedrooms/one bath large unit, 1350 sq. ft. living area and 575 sq. ft. deck; spacious living room with lots of windows, long views to the Western horizon and forest views everywhere else, fireplace, jetted tub in the bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and a very large deck with plenty of deck furniture and a gas grill. Sleeps 4-5 guests

THE RED DOOR APT. (on the floor below the Sunset House): Includes one bedroom/1 bath, independent unit, 575 sq. ft living space + 375 sq. ft deck -- ideal for one couple, fully equipped kitchen. Sleeps 1-4 guests

Pet Friendly Notes

Pets are only allowed in the park on paved trails and roads and pets must be restrained on a leash. In order to protect both pets and wildlife from disease and each the Sunset House vacation property is a pet-free environment
