Wynne Benti, Coons Gallery

Local Artist, Musician, or Craftsperson

Owner, resident artist, Coons Gallery, the Sierra Nevada's oldest gallery since 1945. Graduate of University of California, Davis (Fine Art), and Art Center College of Design (Graphics/Packaging). A member of the California Art Club and Outdoor Writers Association of America, Wynne Benti, was married to painter Richard Coons. Her interpretations of the Sierra Nevada, have always been influenced by the abstract-expressionist style. Benti studied art at the University of California, Davis, with Wayne Thiebaud, Roy DeForest, Roland Peterson and Harvey Himelfarb.

Benti began her design career working for Keith Bright (Bright Strategic Design) in Los Angeles, designing on-board ship signage, travel posters, and brochures for Holland America, whose ship, the Prinsendam had just sunk in the Bay of Alaska. The project is in the permanent design collection of the Library of Congress.

She taught graphic design and typography at both Art Center College of Design and the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1987, Benti went into entertainment design. Her work received numerous awards. She moved to Bishop, California in 1997.

Benti is also publisher at Spotted Dog Press which is celebrating its 15th year in business (2010). A BMW motorcycle rider you can catch one of her article, " Seven Highways Near The Top of the World" in the November 2009 issue of BMW On Magazine.
