Winnedumah Needle

Scenic Viewpoint

ADA Accessibility Notes

View from the highway or drive up Masourka Canyon Road east out of Independence.

From Highway 395 in Independence, you can look east and see the single rock spire locals call the Winnedumah Needle. The rock is silhouetted at the crest of the Inyo Mountains. The story is that the needle is a local Native American hero who directed his people to victory and was turned to stone to commemorate their victory.

Eco-Friendly Notes

The road that used to lead to a trailhead is closed to prevent erosion damage. There is a new parking spot at the end of the road and you hike up the very steep old road on foot until you see the needle.

Take plenty of water, wear a hat and use sunblock. Fall or spring is the best time to hike to the needle. The Inyo Mountains are one of California's best kept secrets.

Pet Friendly Notes

Pets are allowed. Be courteous to other pet owners.
