Discover how FUN science can be!
The UC Davis Thomas J. Long Foundation Education Center inside the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences has something for everyone--docent-led tours, group and student tours, hands-on activities, and a monthly lecture series.
Guided tours present information about Lake Tahoe, science and research, geology, ecology and will leave you with an increased understanding of this beautiful lake. Science exhibits include a virtual research vessel, laboratory, native and non-native fish aquariums, interactive augmented reality sandbox, and 3-D visualization theater.
Come see our award-winning 3-D movie "Lake Tahoe in Depth" (16 minutes) now available in the 3-D Visualization Theater. You can see into the lake, under the water, and around the watershed. Lake Tahoe is affected by many impacts including urbanization, loss of clarity, invasive species and climate change. This tour provides the underlying geologic history of the basin for a better understanding of these issues. "Mapping Change" (9 minutes) 3-D movie describes changes in the Sierra forests from climate change.
The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences is an environmentally-friendly or “green” building. This building has been awarded a LEED Platinum certification, the highest award given by the U.S. Green Building Council. On our “Green Tour,” you can learn about sustainable design, construction and landscaping and see examples of the efficient use of resources within this state-of-the art facility. Green Points of Interest located throughout the building highlight sustainable, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality features. For example, the TCES buildings walls are insulated with recycled cotton denim jeans, the trees used to help build the building were milled on site and used for finish work, and the outdoor enclosures of the building are built of Trex (recycled plastic and wood).
