The Wilderness Institute, Inc., a California 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation, provides outdoor recreation programs and experiential events; featuring eco-tourism, outdoor education, training seminars, wilderness courses and outings for the public and special groups, and mobile rock climbing wall events.

Established in 1984, The Wilderness Institute continues to promote an awareness and appreciation of our natural environment, an understanding of outdoor use and safety, and increased outdoor recreational and educational opportunities for the public. As an outdoor school, we provide students instruction in outdoor skills, natural and cultural history, and team-building initiatives through field outings, school camping, and the Wilderness Challenge program.

Our mission is "to provide holistic adventure-based training and wilderness experiences that foster community building, promote interdependence, enhance self-efficacy, increase environmental sustainability, and inspire others to protect the Earth while improving our quality of life."

Areas of Service and Expertise

We offer outdoor education and adventure retreats for schools and youth groups, adult groups and business teams, and special populations (including people with disabilities, veterans, and youth-at-risk).

Our team-building and leadership development programs bring your organization into the wild to bond, develop new skills, and empower positive change. Our Challenge Ropes Course activities, Eco-Challenge program, and Eco-Volunteering projects make a difference in your organization's effectiveness and enhanced community connections while promoting sustainable business practices.

Our school programs introduce your students to natural science and outdoor skills through hands-on activities which are both stimulating and challenging. Our staff of professional naturalists and specialists can enrich your current studies through hands-on learning in a variety of subjects!

Our therapeutic programs for veterans include the Veterans Challenge, Vet-to-Vet Connect Mentoring, Vet Cadre Training, and Family That Plays together. A major focus is serving military Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and their families. This includes vets who may be part of the veterans administration system, as well as those attending college, and living back at home or on their own. Our holistic experiential learning process integrates the body, mind, and spirit with emphasis on transferring the benefits back into your personal and professional life.

Wilderness Wheelers: These outings for wheel chair users include a series of special events put on by The Wilderness Institute for the general public and disabled community as part of our outreach program for people with physical disabilities, veterans, their families, and volunteers. We integrate activities that promote interdependence, build new friendships, and enhance self-awareness, among other benefits.
