Sutter Creek Inn

Bed and Breakfast

The Sutter Creek Inn is a destination unto itself, since it was the first bed and breakfast to open in the West. Opening in 1966, in a home built right in the heart of town on Main Street, before the Civil War. The Inn played a large role in waking the sleepy but historic town of Sutter Creek, becoming a favorite with guests seeking an experience of gold rush history as well as respite from the big cities and suburbs. Jane Way was inspired to convert this sprawling new England style home when she first set eyes on it, and persuaded, then purchased the home from the original family.

Bed and Breakfast Style

The Inn has numerous original historic outbuildings including a wash-house, a carriage house, a beautiful old weatherized barn and several "payday houses" (houses built one room at a time, when money became available). The 17 rooms are distributed throughout these various outbuildings, featuring wood burning fireplaces, full baths, tubs for two, and even four swinging beds. A beautiful private collection of early American and French Canadian antiques is sprinkled throughout. The grounds boast nearly a hundred trees, and the property, close to an acre and set down from the street, is shaded, with alcoves, hidden porches and patios, expansive lawns, and arbors. The casual California hospitality make guests feel right at home and European visitors are especially enchanted. A full country gourmet breakfast is served table d'hote at 9:00 AM, everyone sitting together at long pine tables.

Eco-Friendly Notes

The owners have implemented many procedures to lower the use of electricity, including clotheslines, and nano-technology based insulation. Recycling has been practiced for many, many years. Rain-water storage is installed and there are fruit trees, a tomato garden, a berry garden, grape vines, and kiwi vines, all contributing a great deal to the menu and resisting delivery by truck. Range free chickens lay the eggs, and brooms are used religiously, many times more often than blowers.

Locally or Family Owned Business Notes

The Sutter Creek Inn has been operated by the same family for 44 years. Jane Way's daughter, Lindsay Way, a sculptor for 30 years, has been operating and managing the Inn for the last 9 years. Jane is 91, and still lives on the premises.
