Driving Directions

Surprise Valley Hot Springs is located on Hwy. 299, 5 miles east of the town of Cedarville, California.

Continuing east from Cedarville, you will cross a dry lake bed on a causeway. Shortly after crossing the lake bed, the Surprise Valley Hot Springs sign and entrance are on the right hand side. Drive one mile to the hotel and check in at the office.

Eco-Friendly Notes

All of our rooms are heated with our geothermal fluid, along with all the hot tubs. We do not have chemicals in our water, just pure natural mineral water.

Locally or Family Owned Business Notes

A friend from Cedarville pass this saying to us:

This house is mine

It also will not belong to the second one

the third one receives it as inheritance

but he will not live forever either

the fourth one is carried out, too

so, I ask:

To whom does this house belong?

This house just happens to be Surprise Valley Hot Springs and it is for the one who needs a rest from the long journey today and for the one who may soak in its waters a 100 years from now. This Hot Springs is a gift to everyone and for four generations it has been placed in the care of the Rose Family. We welcome you to this house.

Welcome to the remote, high-desert valley of northeastern California. Surprise Valley Hot Springs is bordered by the majestic Warner Mountains and Nevada’s Hays Range. You’ll find room to roam, quiet time, therapeutic massage, and vast opportunities for outdoor activities and exploration — consider us your own private destination.

Located on a geothermal active fault line, the water at Surprise Valley Hot Springs rises to the surface at temperatures nearing 200 degrees, cooling in pools and lakes. Artifacts found on the property have been dated back 15,000 years, proving that Native Americans made use of these waters long before the white settlers discovered them.

Unique among other hot springs and spas, all the mineral baths are private, not communal. Each room has an outdoor mineral bath completely screened for privacy. The baths which hold four comfortably, are filled with warm artesian spring water. The temperature is adjustable for every taste. Because the hot tubs are continually draining, no chemicals are used. We use no chemicals just pure water. The tubs are also cleaned after each use.

Besides the mineral baths, the Surprise Valley Hot Springs offers therapeutic massage, an exercise room, catch and release fishing in their private warm water lakes, hot pond and wild fowl viewing and hiking.

An early customer pilot and friends flew into the Cedarville Airport and found their private courtesy car awaiting, complete with directions to the Surprise Valley Hot Springs. After partaking of the Fly-N-Soak package for several days, which included a half hour massage, they had a few words of advice, "You don't charge enough."

The full moon cresting the Hayes mountain range casts a softened searchlight across the desert landscape looking for just the perfect spot. Moments pass, then the gentle glow finds a stream of water trickling over rocks before it falls into a small pool. Stars collect on the water's surface sending sparks of light into the night sky. A wisp of steam escaping the waiting waters reach out beckoning to abandon the cool night air and yield to its warm embrace. Feeling the warmth of the geothermal energy soothing my bare feet as I walk on the concrete to the pool's edge. Soft music soothes my spirit as the warm artesian spring water relaxes my tired body. Relaxing back into the form fitting relining bath at one corner of the pool I gaze at the myriad of stars in the night sky, forgetting my worries.
