Nevada City Bicycle Classic

Competition or Sporting Event
The Nevada City Bicycle Classic is known throughout the cycling world – Dave Carter

The Nevada City Bicycle Classic is one of the premiere sporting events in the Sierra foothills, the largest and oldest bike race on the West Coast, and the second-oldest race in the nation.

Held every Father's Day in historic downtown Nevada City, the Nevada City Bicycle Classic showcases the summer beauty and sporting opportunities of the Northern Sierra. Situated at 2500 feet, Nevada City presents a steep challenging 1.1-mile looped race course through the downtown historic district and surrounding Victorian neighborhoods. Juniors, women, master's and professional cyclists race up to 40 circuits in a day of racing.

The Nevada City Bicycle Classic is one of America's premier cycling events. It attracts some of the best road racers in America and from around the world. Tour de France champions Greg LeMond and Lance Armstrong are previous winners of the Nevada City Classic. Three-time Tour of California champion Levi Leipheimer also won in Nevada City.

Nevada City's long and storied history of bicycle racing -- It began in 1961 and is the oldest bike race in Western America and the second oldest in the nation -- has brought worldwide attention to the Northern Sierra, particularly in 2010 when Nevada City was chosen to host the start of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, a televised event followed across the nation and internationally.

Historic Nevada City is draped with flags and bunting and provides a colorful backdrop as cyclists whiz through the downtown area, spokes flashing and crowds cheering. Several thousand spectators attend the traditional Father’s Day event.

Senior and professional riders representing top U.S. cycling teams are expected to race in the men’s 90-minute main event. Women’s, Junior’s and Master’s races also are planned. Action begins at 1 p.m. and is usually complete by about 6:30 p.m.

Nevada City is located at the 2500-foot elevation on the forested western slope of the Sierra Nevada. From Sacramento, it’s a one-hour drive via eastbound Interstate 80 and northbound Highway 49. Nevada City is 90 minutes from Reno via westbound I-80 and Highway 20.

The Nevada City Classic is under the direction and sponsorship of the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce.
