Located in historic Susanville, the Pioneer Saloon, established in 1862, is the oldest operating business in northeast California. The bar, building and its large, exterior vintage neon sign (now restored and shining over Main Street) are beloved local icons. People come in to take a seat at the 36-foot-long bar, ostensibly the longest in northeast California, and admire the display of hundreds of hand painted ranch brands representing generations of Lassen County cattlemen and women. The back room features a historic mural, one of many in Susanville, but the only one located inside a building, that celebrates the ranching and logging traditions of Lassen County.
Lassen Ale Works at the Pioneer Saloon opened in May of 2012 after nearly a year of planning and work by four partners: Erik Jefferts, Julie Howard, Margaret Liddiard and Mark Pfenning. The foursome dreamed of creating a warm, welcoming brew pub in a historic building that would become a community gathering spot and provide a boost to the economy. The four felt lucky to find this historic western saloon, steeped in history, with its rustic appeal still intact.
Master Brewer Erik Jefferts specializes in ales with a particular emphasis on hoppy ales, like IPAs, and stronger beers such as Imperial Stouts. Our six “house” beers that are always on tap include Bizz Johnson Blonde Ale, Almanor Amber Ale, Rooptown Red Ale, Eagle Lake IPA, Uptown Brown Ale and Pioneer Porter. Our beers are named to commemorate our cultural heritage and cherished natural resources. Erik is always perfecting his recipes with smaller runs of seasonal and specialty beers, plus we have “guest taps” that feature new brews from regional craft breweries. Stop by for a pint, and watch Erik brew.
Delicious house made food complements the featured brews such as our beer battered Pacific cod and hand cut fries, fresh salads and Basque specialties originating from the turn-of-the-century Basque shepherds who made Susanville and Lassen County their home. Most entrees are under $10. (See menu and beer selections at www.lassenaleworks.com.) The full service bar features beer - of course - along with a premium well, top shelf spirits, and California wines.
The local community of Susanville and Lassen County have embraced Lassen Ale Works at the Pioneer Saloon because we have preserved the historic saloon and brought a fresh vibrancy to the Uptown area. Local businesses and civic groups hold meetings here, and friends and family gather for a bite and a beer.
Travelers attracted by the vintage neon signage or recommended by locals, are delighted and amazed when they open the door to a Western saloon and find it full of friendly folks dining, drinking ales and playing pool. The saloon is a favorite watering hole for outdoor enthusiasts to recover from a day of riding on the single track trails at Susanville Ranch Park or riding and hiking along the famous Rails-to-Trails Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail located in the historic train depot.
We are proud to buy our fresh ingredients locally, and all of our spent grain resulting from the brewing process is donated to local ranchers for cattle feed. We only use green cleaning products to ensure the health of our guests and environment.
