Locally or Family Owned Business Notes

Owned by Milton Melkonian, an Armenian American.

Lake Elowin Resort is located at the bottom of an alluvial fan in Three Rivers. The natural watering hole that resulted was used by the Yokut Indians and animals. A teepee stood on the land until the 1940s.

In the late 1800s, the land was deeded water rights from the Mt. Whitney Electric Company that released 2,000 gallons a day. So when Herb Wilson bought the property in the 20’s, he enhanced the facilities by building cabins and transforming the bog into a lake which still has continual fresh water going in and out. He named the resort ‘Elowin,’ meaning “enchanted land beyond the setting sun.”

The water tower and building located just down the road on Dinely are the remnants of an old weigh station. Stage coaches used to stop there for a drink before heading up Dinely Road to the Sequoia National Park before the Gateway bridge was built in the 20’s.

Milton Melkonian bought Lake Elowin resort in 1977 and has maintained its old California resort appearance and peacefulness. The man made lake has two bodies with an island separating them. If you walk across the bridge you can sit on a picnic table and have a barbeque and enjoy the view of the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains. Kids always like to paddle in the canoes, play ping pong or relax by the koi and gold fish pond. There is a short path that leads to the Kaweah River for fishing and swimming. A serene getaway, Lake Elowin has attracted all types of visitors including writers and movie producers.
