Eden Vale Inn Bed and Breakfast
Eden Vale Inn began as a classic California hay barn. The barn was built in 1918 by a homesteading family of dairy farmers, the Williamsons. In 1985, newlyweds Mark Hamlin and Gayle Erbe-Hamlin, purchased the then old barn with 10 acres. After twenty five years of hard work and investment, the property has grown to include acres of gardens, a beautiful swimming pond, seven guest rooms, and a main building of unmatched character. The skeleton of the old barn, constructed from old growth Sierra Nevada timber, is well preserved and now featured as art and architecture. A fireplace, built from local slate rock, has been added as the central living room feature; it soars twenty seven feet to the ceiling. And, hanging from the ceiling, one can still see the old block and tackle used to hoist in the hay. Eden Vale Inn is a destination of rustic sophistication. In contrast to the rough old timbers making its frame, Eden Vale Inn offers a luxury retreat that emphasizes a thoroughly sophisticated style and comfort. This elegant bed and breakfast is located in a timeless rustic landscape in California’s Gold Country. Here you will stay in one of seven exclusive private rooms, each with a unique style designed to soothe the senses and invigorate the spirit. Rooms are totally modern and designed for needs of traveling guests. All have luxury showers, propane fireplaces, free phones and internet, soundproofing, quiet and efficient cooling, and a computerized lighting system. Some rooms have HDTV's and deep spa tubs located on outside private decks or patios.
Conveniently located between Placerville and Coloma, California, the Inn offers easy access to local attractions and seasonal events in El Dorado County including wineries, Apple Hill, dining, shopping, rafting, Gold Country Touring, hiking, biking and skiing.
Eden Vale Inn tries to do its part in being environmentally conscious. First and foremost, the design of the main building takes advantage of passive solar heating and ground cooling and the temperature swings are smoothed with thermal mass. Also, guest rooms have highly efficient and individually controlled, ductless mini splits for heating and cooling. In the winter, public space is heated largely with firewood which avoids the use of fossil fuels while creating a comfortable and warm ambiance. The Lutron computerized lighting system significantly reduces electricity use by dimming and optimizing lighting, by turning lighting off when it is not needed and, by turning lighting on only when it is needed. In addition we compost all vegetable food waste, recycle grey water, recycle trash, and use bio-friendly soaps and detergent. When we buy appliances energy efficiency is always a key requirement. Finally, to the extent possible, we either grow our own fruits and vegetables or, buy them from local farms and orchards. it’s part of what makes our gourmet breakfasts gourmet.
Locally or Family Owned Business Notes
The owners, Mark Hamlin and Gayle Erbe-Hamlin, have lived on and developed the property over a 25 year period. The Bed and Breakfast continues to be their home while now also having a commercial use. The business is run as a California corporation Eden Vale Inn, Inc. (EVI). The Small Business of the Year Award for 2010 went to Eden Vale Inn as granted by Sierra Economic Development Corporation (SEDCorp) who provides regional funding for small business. EVI also contributes financial support to local community organizations such as the Trailfest and the Womens Center. EVI is active in the local business community and has hosted meetings and events for the Coloma Chamber of Commerce, the El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce, and the Bed and Breakfast Inns of El Dorado County. EVI is committed to promoting agri-tourism in El Dorado County and will continue to support local business, the community, and tourism.
