Cafe Mahjaic & The Lotus Inn
ADA Accessibility Notes
Accessible
Cafe Mahjaic and The Lotus Inn sits on a 5-acre parcel constructed in 1855 that is also the home of owners, John and Gina Metropulos who implement sustainable practices that have successfully helped to preserve the character and integrity of the land necessary to yield the finest bounty for over 150 years.
Dinners at Café Mahjaic are New American with a mix of ethnic backgrounds. All food, sauces and breads are made from scratch using naturally raised organic meat and grains, and organic produce when available. All of the fresh fish comes from the ocean. Depending on the seasons and available fresh ingredients, a selection of three to six daily menu “specials” are served, as well as a menu consisting of appetizers, salads, soup, entrees, and desserts.
The Lotus Inn, built in 1857, is a two-story brick building surrounded by many old trees, bushes and flowers. There are six rooms of varying size and accommodation; three upstairs and three down. Each room has a private bathroom.
Eco-Friendly Notes
Dedicated to sustainable practices, the Metropulos grow as much produce as possible on site and compost.
Locally or Family Owned Business Notes
Born in Illinois, John cooked in restaurants at an early age. When he moved to Grass Valley in 1990, he had the opportunity to attend the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco in 1991. This schooling also included a semester internship in Hawaii working in five different restaurants on the island.
Upon graduation from the Academy in 1994, John attended All Outdoors Rafting Guide School in Lotus where he met Gina. In between traveling and living in Grass Valley, John worked in the restaurant industry and Gina began a career in the medical field. They returned to Lotus in 2004 to start their adventure with Café Mahjaic and Lotus Inn.
